Thoughts from Behind The Chair

·

Not too long ago I had a pastor friend in the chair tell me that he did not like listening to Christians that made him feel worse about his faith. What he meant by the statement was that he did not listen to preachers that made him feel like he was not a good Christian. This statement bothered me for quite a while, because I am the exact opposite. I want to hear preaching that pushes me in my understanding and makes me uncomfortable with the state in which I am in. I understand that not everyone is the same, but I feel like his statement was a symptom of a sickness that we seem to have in the modern church. A sickness that keeps us from conviction.

It reminds me of another conversation I was having, and someone said “I know the Bible is boring, and prayer is hard”. If this was said by unbelievers I would agree, however these were believers talking. I agreed with them when it was said, however i fear that that truth is only true, because of a judgement that we are under. The scripture and prayer are two things Christians have suffered and died for by the thousands throughout history. Men and women have cherished their bibles more than any other possession they have owned. If it is boring for Christians we should be afraid. If we can’t find time to read and pray, we should be very Afraid. And if we can’t hear hard truths about our faith, than we should wonder if we have any at all.
